Albarello. Savona Pharmacy Jar, Majolica Earthenware (maiolica), 18th Century, Lantern-shaped
Blue-and-white majolica albarello, lantern-marked—Savona, 18th century
An important, slightly curved cylindrical apothecary jar (albarello or albarelle) made of tin-glazed earthenware (majolica).
The main panel features a remarkable blue-and-white monochrome decoration (cobalt blue) depicting a bucolic landscape animated by traditional village houses, stylized bell towers, and leafy mounds. The neck and foot are accented by concentric horizontal blue bands.
The reverse side of the vase bears the “Lanterna” mark, painted in blue. This heraldic symbol, representing the lighthouse tower of the port of Genoa (La Lanterna), corresponds to the exclusive privilege granted by the Genoese Senate to the master faience makers of the Savona and Albisola regions in Liguria. The letter painted beneath the lighthouse identifies the production workshop.
The underside of the base, left unglazed and in its raw state, reveals a beige/gray clay body typical of Ligurian pottery, as well as distinct striations from the potter’s wheel. The interior retains its original turning grooves and protective glaze.
Period: 18th century (circa 1750–1780)
Origin: Italy, Liguria (Savona / Albisola)
In very good overall condition for a utilitarian piece from this period. The body and neck are in perfect condition; no restoration or repainting detected. There are slight, perfectly acceptable wear marks on the upper rim and foot, attesting to its authenticity.
Height: 23.5 cm
Diameter at the neck: 10 cm
