Hst Altar Servers
Oil on canvas, religious genre scene, circa the last third of the 19th century. Signed in red in the lower left corner, “Anselma.”
Two young altar boys, depicted from the waist up against a dark background of wood paneling or a door. The contrast between the direct gaze of one and the bowed head of the other lends the composition a strong sense of presence. The rendering of the fabrics (lace, pearly whites) and the gilding is very meticulous.
Frame: original wooden frame with gilded stucco, typical of the Second Empire or the Third Republic. It bears the number “41,” likely an inventory or exhibition number.
Note: There is a small hole in the older boy’s lace sleeve.
