Theodore Legras Amethyst Glass Vase With Aviation Motifs, Airplanes, And A Gilded Landscape, 1910
Antique vase from the François-Théodore Legras factory, made of translucent amethyst-colored glass, with enameled and gilded decoration depicting the early days of aviation, circa 1910–1912.
The piece is adorned with a large white enameled airplane accented with gold, accompanied by small stylized gold airplanes.
The lower portion features a wooded landscape with houses and a bell tower, finely rendered in gold.
The neck is accented by a frieze of flowering foliage.
This design illustrates the enthusiasm for the early aeronautical feats of the early 20th century, a period marked by records and cross-country flights achieved by aviation pioneers.
François-Théodore Legras (1839–1916), a master glassmaker from the Vosges region, took over the Saint-Denis glassworks in 1866. His factory developed a significant production of decorative glassware, notably pieces made of enameled and gilded glass. In the early 20th century, it also produced vases commemorating advances in aviation, including several models dedicated to early aeronautical feats.
