Jean-René Nadal (1733–1783), known as Nadal the Elder. Cabinetmaker and sculptor. Master’s certificate obtained on September 22, 1756
Louis XV period, 18th century
Jean-René Nadal was the eldest son of Jean Nadal, a chairmaker, and the daughter of his colleague Jean Cresson. He was also the brother of Jean-Michel Nadal, himself a chairmaker. Nadal took over the workshop on Rue de Cléry—likely after his father’s death—and decided to set up shop on the same street under the sign “Lion d’Argent.”
Throughout his career, he worked primarily for the Crown as well as for the Count of Artois, to whom he delivered numerous chairs.
