This painting is inspired by one of the Venetian artist’s best-known works (The Penitent Magdalene), of which numerous autograph versions and copies—each interpreted differently—are known. Here, too, we can see that the figure of Mary Magdalene is positioned in the opposite direction compared to the versions in St. Petersburg, the Rijksmuseum, and the Pitti Palace. This aspect, however, supports the artist’s evident intention to offer an interpretation independent of the original work, and it is interesting to observe the quality not only of the painting itself but also of the still life in the foreground
