Curved-wood Stool By Jacob & Josef Kohn, Vienna – Circa 1900

Artist: Jacob&josef Kohn
???? Antique J. & J. Kohn bentwood stool – Austria, early 20th century

A very beautiful antique stool from the Austrian manufacturer J. & J. Kohn, recognizable by its original label still present under the seat: “J. & J. KOHN – WIEN – AUSTRIA.” A lovely piece of Viennese bentwood furniture—understated, elegant, and particularly decorative.

????️ The J. & J. Kohn label is still present beneath the seat, allowing for a definitive attribution to the famous Austrian manufacturer Jacob & Josef Kohn. The company is documented in Vienna between 1867 and 1917 and ranks among the great historic manufacturers of bentwood furniture.

???? The frame is made of stained bentwood, most likely beech, the signature material of this production. The Musée d’Orsay, in particular, holds a collection of Kohn furniture made of stained bent beech.

⭕ Its design is particularly striking: a round seat encircled by a thick band, four slender, slightly flared legs, and a large circular crossbar made of bent wood connecting the base. A design that is both visually light and highly graphic.

✨ The wooden seat features a lovely, slightly recessed circular top, highlighted by a thin dark trim. The simplicity of the design particularly showcases the warm patina of the wood.

????️ It is likely a piece from the early 20th century, circa 1900–1910.

???? The wood has a beautiful antique patina, with its shades of brown, small scuffs, marks, scratches, and signs of wear. I would definitely keep this look as is: it’s precisely what gives the piece its character.

???? The underside is also worth preserving in its original condition, with its Kohn label and several fragments of vintage labels and paper still visible.

???? Dimensions: H 55 cm × Ø 35 cm
???? Width at the base: approx. 30 cm

???? At 55 cm tall, it works just as well as an occasional stool as it does as a small seat, plant stand, or display stand for a decorative object. Its Viennese design blends easily into antique, Art Nouveau, bistro-style, or more contemporary interiors.

???? Shipping available in France and worldwide, or in-person pickup.
