19th-century School, The Meeting Of Faust And Marguerite
Highly popular in the 19th century, the theme of the encounter between Faust and Marguerite was depicted by painters such as Delacroix, Tissot, and Ary Scheffer. In addition to the main characters, Mephistopheles can be seen in the background, as well as Marthe on the left, Marguerite’s neighbor and confidante.
In Gounod’s opera, this is the moment when Faust offers his arm, while Marguerite, declining his offer, replies: “I am neither a young lady nor beautiful; I have no need for anyone to offer me their hand!
