André Delauzières, whose real name was AndréBalande, was a French painter born in Paris in 1904. He was the son of the famouspainter Gaston Balande, with whom he shared a love of paintingand landscapes from an early age.
To sign his works, Andréchose the name Delauzières, in reference to Lauzières, a town nearNieul-sur-Mer where his father had set up his studio. He mainly paintedlandscapes, harbors, streets, and scenes from the La Rochelle region, with a very personal sensibility.Unfortunately, his life was cut short. After being wounded during the war, he fell ill and died on August 23,1941, at the age of only 37.
His story is all the moremoving because he is often presented today as the son of GastonBalande, even though André Delauzières had developed his ownartistic world. Behind this artist’s name lies a brief butinteresting family and artistic history, spanning Paris, La Rochelle, andCharente-Maritime.
