Pair Of Louis XVI-style Bergère Chairs With Winged Backs, Made Of Gilded Wood, Second Half Of The 19th Century
An important pair of Louis XVI-style "à oreilles" bergère armchairs, made of carved wood and gilded with gold leaf. The high, enveloping backrest features the characteristic side "ears." The frame is richly carved: the top of the backrest is finished with a frieze featuring a motif of leaves and rosettes, while the outline of the backrest and armrests is decorated with a beaded and laurel-leaf molding. The armrests, which end in volutes and acanthus leaves, rest on shaped uprights. The seat panel is adorned with a delicate ribbon-and-leaf frieze, featuring carved rosettes at the leg joints. The legs are truncated conical, fluted, and tapered, in the purest neoclassical tradition.
