French School (c. 1920) - Amiens Cathedral As Seen From The Somme

- Oil on panel.

- Above the murky waters of the Somme, which reflect the image of a world on the brink of collapse, the colossal structure of Amiens Cathedral rises not as a refuge of faith, but as a formidable mass of spectral stone engulfing the last glimmers of a blazing twilight. In this landscape steeped in an oppressive foreboding, the sulfur-yellow, ashen sky seems to burn with the will-o’-the-wisps of epidemics or tragedies lurking behind the tightly packed rooftops of the medieval city. Nothing moves on the quay; not a soul crosses the bridge; only the colossal weight of the edifice breaks the silence, raising its spires toward an indifferent eternity, while the stone—eroded by the centuries and shrouded in a patina of impenetrable mystery— contemplates with imposing majesty as earthly life gently fades away in the shadows of the canal.
