Anthropomorphic Boxwood Snuffbox Depicting A Woman In Traditional Headdress, 19th-century Folk Art
Large anthropomorphic snuffbox carved from boxwood, depicting a woman wearing traditional attire: a wide shawl draped over her shoulders and reaching to her feet, and a beautiful headdress with horizontal wings extending upward on either side of her head. A fine example of regional folk art. Dates from the 19th century.
This snuffbox is in generally good condition, in its original state, though it has sustained some damage over time. The lower section with the feet opens via a hinge. Superb quality; it is particularly interesting due to the quality of its carving and, above all, its size (16 cm tall).
Please note: the head has been reattached at the neck, as has a piece of the headdress; there are chips and traces of glue on one foot. The hinge is broken. Please examine the photos closely (especially the red arrows) for details.
