Charles Dehoy (1872–1940), Belgian artist, “Marine,” oil on canvas
A self-taught painter, Charles Dehoy devoted himself primarily to landscape painting, which he exhibited at various art shows.
Initially influenced by Impressionism and Luminism, he quickly became receptive to the artistic explorations of the Fauvists, following the example of some of his contemporaries, such as Rik Wouters. It was notably through his contact with Ferdinand Schirren—whom he met upon his return from a trip to the south of France—that his artistic practice evolved.
He then became part of the movement that would later be known as Brabant Fauvism. He adopted a method that incorporated large blocks of flat color into his compositions, allowing him to best capture the play of light.
However, the outbreak of World War I brought the rise of this artistic movement to a halt.
