Théodore Deck was a French ceramicist who worked for major German princely and imperial patrons early in his career. In the 1840s and 1850s, he worked for various pottery and earthenware manufacturers. In 1858, the Deck brothers founded their own ceramics company and produced numerous shaped pieces. He exhibited his creations at various salons and international exhibitions and eventually became Director of the Sèvres Manufactory in 1887.
Turquoise blue, similar to the color of porcelain lampshades, became his signature and is still known today as “Deck Blue.”
