Fernand LAVAL went through several painting periods; this painting represents his best period, known as the “Impressionist.” He painted with spontaneous brushstrokes, displaying great pictorial lightness while allowing the canvas to show through.
This period lasted only a very short time in the mid-1950s and is the most sought-after by collectors and the highest-valued.

Biography:

Fernand LAVAL 1886 / 1966

Fernand Laval arrived in Paris in 1912, where he befriended Maurice Utrillo and roamed the streets of Montmartre with his easel. In 1913, he married Rachel Cohenet, and in 1920 he made his first appearance at the Salon d’Automne, where he exhibited a painting titled “From Montmartre to Les Halles.”

He also worked abroad, notably in the Netherlands, painting numerous windmills in 1927–28, and traveled to Belgium, where he painted the port of Antwerp.

In 1963, as a tribute to Renoir, he painted Renoir’s house, “La Collette,” in Cagnes-sur-Mer.

His favorite subjects will always be the heart of Paris, Montmartre—including the Sacré-Cœur—the Paris suburbs, the old fortifications, and the Canal Saint-Martin.

His later works are rendered in dark shades of brown, earth tones, and black.
