Antique Terracotta Jar, Italy, 19th Century

We are offering this antique Italian terracotta jar, dating from the 19th century, an object with a unique historical charm. Jars of this type were made in Italian regions known for olive cultivation, such as Liguria, Tuscany, and Southern Italy. This jar bears three stamped seals, including the *lily* emblem characteristic of the Tuscany region. Historically, these large jars were used to store and transport olive oil.

The jar features a classic ovoid shape, widening in the center and tapering toward both the base and the rim. The upper rim features a glossy glazed finish; historically, this glaze served to prevent liquids from seeping through the porous terracotta and to keep insects away. The main body is made of raw, light beige terracotta with an almost sandy texture. The surface is uneven, showing clear signs of craftsmanship, as well as the imperfections and small flaws typical of handmade objects.

The vase is in good condition and retains a distinctive patina, with surface color variations resulting from exposure to the elements and the material’s natural aging process.
