Depicting a view of the dunes at La Panne (Belgian coast, North Sea), painted around 1880, at a time when all Belgian Impressionist painters came there in search of light.

Louis Robbe, 1806–1887, a Belgian painter of animals, landscapes, and figure compositions, was born in Kortrijk. Initially a lawyer in Brussels, he served for a time as a justice of the peace, worked at the Ministry of Finance, and headed a major law firm. Despite these demanding responsibilities, he pursued artistic studies and was a student of Jean-Baptiste De Jonghe and, above all, of Eugène Verboeckhoven, from whom he adopted a smooth technique. He began exhibiting at the age of 24 but did not devote himself seriously to painting until 1833. He made his debut at the 1835 Ghent Salon, then exhibited in Bruges and Kortrijk. He subsequently exhibited in Brussels and Paris, where he won numerous prizes and participated in the Paris World’s Fairs of 1855 and 1878. Louis Robbe was one of the most ardent pioneers of modern painting in Belgium. He ran a painting studio in Brussels, and his students included the painters Edouard Woutermaertens, Henri Baert, and Laurent De Beul. A gifted and cultured man, he supported Charles de Groux, the instigator of the Realist movement in Belgium. He was the older brother of the painter Henri Robbe. He died on May 2, 1887, in Brussels. Works are held in museums in Antwerp, Arlon, Brussels, Kortrijk, Ghent, Lille, Mechelen, and Moscow. The artist is listed in the Bénézit (with a sample signature), the Arto, and the Piron, and is rated by Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc.
