Small Round Corozo Box, Carved With A Cherub Musician Holding A Torch And A Quiver, 19th Century

A delicate little round box made of finely carved and openwork corozo, decorated on the top with a cherub playing the trumpet; on the back, a quiver of arrows and a crossed torch, all set against arabesques and leafy scrollwork; the work of a sailor or convict*, dating from the 19th century.

This box is in good condition. It is particularly interesting due to the finesse of its carving.

Please note: tiny nicks along the edges (barely visible in reality), slight signs of age; see photos.

*Coconut, like corozo, was carved by sailors or, in some cases, by convicts. The latter carved it to pass the time but also, and above all, to earn a little money to improve their daily lives. It may also have been made by sailors during their long voyages. These coconut or corozo objects are beautiful examples of folk art.
