Original Lithograph “damier” By Alexander Calder—derrière Le Miroir No. 156

Color lithograph by Alexander Calder (1898–1976), taken from the famous issue No. 156 of the magazine Derrière le Miroir, published by Maeght Éditeur in Paris in February 1966, on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Calder at the Maeght Gallery.

This abstract composition, titled “Damier”, is characteristic of Calder’s graphic style: a network of dynamic black lines crisscrossed by brightly colored geometric shapes in yellow, red, and blue.

The work is printed on paper and features, on the reverse, a text by Calder titled “From the Art Students League to the Totems…”, excerpted from his autobiographical memoirs. In it, he recounts, among other things, his arrival at the Art Students League of New York in 1923 and his early years devoted to drawing and artistic training.

Issue No. 156 of Derrière le Miroir is particularly sought after because it is entirely devoted to Alexander Calder and features texts by Jacques Prévert, Alexander Calder, Meyer Schapiro, and Nicholas Guppy, accompanied by lithographs and reproductions.
