Rare Seditious Box Inscribed "he Will Live Forever"—napoleon I, 19th Century

A seditious box made of molded pressed wood, decorated with a scene depicting the funeral procession during the burial of Napoleon I’s coffin on Saint Helena, bearing the inscription “He will live forever.” The back is decorated with stars.

The interior is lined with speckled tortoiseshell and conceals, beneath its screw-mounted base, a depiction of the Emperor standing before military regalia—symbols of France’s greatness under his reign.
This depiction is imperceptible, as the various elements are perfectly fitted together.

Whether small everyday objects or collector’s items, these “seditious” boxes concealed a genuine political message beneath an innocuous appearance, as they expressed opposition to or protest against the ruling power. The “pro-Napoleon I” boxes were mostly created during the Restoration
