This early work by the artist—created when he was only 24 years old—demonstrates his avant-garde sensibilities through both its technique and composition. The year is 1899. Here, the “Master of Dreams” offers us a dual interpretation, paying homage both to the world of entertainment and to the myth of eternal love. In Pierre Laprade’s excellent book, we learn that he published a lithograph of “Arlequin and Colombine” in 1899, the same year our painting was created. We had held it in our collection for 15 years, and it had been given to the painter Henri Marrot. It is now available on the art market.
