Gilded bronze table clock, featuring a raised base resting on legs, decorated with garlands composed of elements clearly inspired by classical art. This base is surmounted by a pedestal on which two allegorical female figures are seated (one holding a globe or sphere, the other a scroll), with their backs turned toward the architectural element that houses the dial. The dial is marked with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals at five-minute intervals, and bears an inscription (MARQUIS / A PARIS). It is surmounted by two putti on clouds supporting a sphere. The Parisian-style movement bears two hallmarks: one partially erased and the other more legible (MÉDAILLE D’OR PONS 1827). Honoré Pons (Paris, 1773–1851; active until 1847) was a famous French watchmaker, known for reviving the watchmaking industry in Saint-Nicolas-d’Aliermont and who received a major award in 1827 (Gold Medal, 1827 Paris Exhibition), which he had engraved on the hallmarks of his creations from that year. Louis Auguste Marquis (1811–1885) was a bronze artist who worked with his colleague Gilbert Honoré Chaumont between 1838 and 1844 (specializing in lighting), gaining recognition as early as 1839. Chaumont retired from business around 1844, and Marquis joined the “Réunion des Fabricants de bronzes” in Paris, thereby becoming the principal supplier to the royal and imperial palaces. It is known that a very similar piece exists at the MF Sumtsov Historical Museum in Kharkiv, Ukraine; and two others, adorned with allegorical figures and putti in oxidized bronze, one in a private collection and the other in the Collection du Mobilier National de France (reference GML 11406; also by Louis-Auguste Marquis). It should be noted that the female allegorical figures are inspired by motifs from a famous clock, a copy of which is housed at the Getty Museum, featuring a movement by Étienne-Augustin Le Roy and bronze work by Étienne Martincourt (France, died after 1791, master in 1762), dated around 1772, which was located in Louis XVI’s “council chamber” at the Tuileries Palace in Paris (reference 73.DB.78).
