Philippe de Commynes, also known as Philippe de Commines or Philippe de La Clyte de Commynes, born in 1447 and died in 1511, was a French-speaking Flemish politician, chronicler, historian, and memoirist. Philippe de Comines first entered the service of Charles the Bold before joining the court of Louis XI, who appointed him Seneschal of Poitou; he remained in Louis XI’s service until the king’s death. However, he opposed the young King Charles VIII, which led to his fall from favor and periods of imprisonment. He served as a diplomat in Italy, but he is best known for his memoirs, which are an important source for the history of France and even of Europe.
