Born in Paray-le-Monial (Saône-et-Loire) in 1943, Annie Maume has ceramics in her DNA. In the Corneau family, since 1637, five generations of men and women have worked the clay of the Puisaye region; Annie is the fortieth member of this great family of potters.
Her father, Jean Maume (1911–1968), was orphaned at the age of fifteen. In 1927, to support his mother, brother, and sister, he left school to work in a pottery factory. He worked as a potter in Myennes and later in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye at “Capi Normand.”
Robert Héraud was born in the heart of Sancerre in 1924. He has been painting since he was very young, and it was only natural that he turned his passion into his profession.
His attachment to his native region led him to meet the artisan potters of Puisaye and La Borne. An artist at heart, his interest in this land bordered by forests and rich in clay led him to embark on a journey into ceramics. He trained in wheel-throwing with Armand Bedu.
Familiar with paint pigments, Robert decided to teach himself about glazes by studying a few books (which were rare at the time) and through empirical experimentation, jotting down the results of each chemical formula in a notebook. Rigorous, persevering, and dedicated, he learned to master the alchemy of pigments and the vagaries of firing.
