Ramino, "noblewoman," Oil On Copper, Early 19th Century

Ramino, “Nobildonna,” oil on copper, early 1800s

A beautiful oil painting by Ramino depicting a woman in typical period attire, early 1800s

Instead of coarse cloth, sumptuous fabrics such as velvet, silk, and brocade began to be introduced, and the lines of women’s dresses became more flowing and seductive.

This new eccentricity reflected a broader cultural shift: the transition from the Baroque to the Rococo.

The Rococo was a period characterized by the exuberant and excessive spirit that swept through Versailles and Paris and from there spread to other European courts.
