Pair Of Guéridon Tables
A splendid and rare pair of 18th-century Venetian guéridons, dating from the late 18th century, crafted from finely carved, lacquered, and richly gilded wood.
The two tables are distinguished by the presence of Moorish figures—a highly popular motif in the Venetian decorative tradition—depicted standing upright as they support the tabletop. The figures, characterized by vibrant polychrome painting on a dark background and sumptuous gilded details, are embellished with refined ornamental motifs and rich relief carving.
The leg rises in a sinuous, undulating line, decorated with volutes, plant motifs, leaves, and rocaille ornaments, before joining the three-part base. The elegantly curved legs end in highly sculptural feet and are embellished with additional plant and leaf motifs. The band beneath the top features magnificent carved decoration with leaf, scroll, and shell motifs, enhanced by brilliant gilding.
Particularly refined is the contrast between the dark lacquer of the figures, the polychromatic colors of their garments, and the luminosity of the gilding—reflecting the theatrical, exotic, and dramatic style that distinguishes some of the most elegant Venetian furnishings of the 18th century.
A pair of extraordinary decorative presence, capable of combining Rococo imagination, theatricality, and high-quality carving, ideal for reception rooms and particularly prestigious antique collections.
