A beautiful oil on canvas by Angelo Bellini depicting a landscape of Tuscan villages, titled “Villaggi Toscani” on the reverse. The work is signed in the lower right corner and also bears a handwritten inscription on the back indicating the artist’s name and the title.

The composition is built up in a succession of overlapping planes that combine villages, houses, fields, walls, terraces, and hills. Bellini does not seek a strictly realistic depiction of the landscape: he reconstructs it using large swaths of color, oblique lines, and flat areas of color that give the whole an architectural structure.

The lower part is enlivened by the houses and roads that structure the foreground, then the viewer’s gaze rises toward the cultivated terraces, groves, and villages nestled in the hills. In the background, the bluish hills gently frame the composition and lend it depth.

The color palette is based on shades of pinkish earth tones, ochres, browns, mauves, and bluish grays, punctuated by bolder strokes of turquoise, orange, yellow, and white. The texture is varied: some areas are rendered with a smudged technique that reveals the canvas’s weave, while others feature more pronounced impasto and graphic touches applied with a dry brush.

This construction of the landscape through fragments and interlocking planes places the work within a modern tradition of 20th-century Italian painting, with a post-Cubist sensibility evident in the way architecture is simplified and space is organized without abandoning figuration.

Angelo Bellini (1938–2022), born in Mantua, studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. His work is characterized by a highly personal construction of space, based on the fragmentation of forms, light, and planes. His landscapes are organized as multifaceted compositions, where architecture, topography, and vegetation interlock in a rigorous balance.

His painting combines a strong mastery of perspective with a palette dominated by warm, harmonious tones. The interplay of light and shadow, the layering of planes, and the color relationships give his compositions an almost kaleidoscopic quality, straddling the line between figuration and abstraction. Angelo Bellini passed away in May 2022.
