One side displays metric markings in centimeters (cm), while the other shows markings in "HS"—corresponding to "hands," the traditional unit for measuring horse height—subdivided into inches. The rod is fitted with a horizontal brass crossbar featuring a built-in spirit level, allowing for precise positioning at the horse's withers. The measuring rod extends to approximately 1.80 meters.
