Seascape by Louis, François Cabanes (1867–1947), oil on canvas, signed lower right; born in Montauban and died in Paris.
He followed the advice of Bourdelle, whom he met again in Paris and with whom he remained friends throughout his life.
He received a scholarship from the city to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. He later received another scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He joined the studio of Gérôme and later that of Gustave Moreau. He followed the advice of Jean Paul Laurens.
He won a silver medal at the Salon de la Nationale in 1890.
He traveled extensively: Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and Spain. His art was enriched by his stay in Algeria.
He participated in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1895 to 1937.
He won a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1927.
He participated in the Colonial Exhibition in Paris in 1906 and in the Brussels Exhibition in 1910.
Louis Cabanes served successively as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, inspector of drawing education for the City of Paris, and president of the Society of French Artists. He was also president of the Ingres Society.
