A septarian nodule (in Dutch: “septarieknol” or “septarian concretion”) is a round or oval rock nodule containing a network of natural fissures that have subsequently been filled with minerals such as calcite, aragonite, or barite.
They generally form in ancient sedimentary layers. Initially, a hard concretion forms in soft mud, for example around organic matter or a site of chemical precipitation. As the material dries, shrinks, and undergoes geological changes, cracks appear inside. Later, mineral-rich water flows through these cracks and fills them.
