Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Document And Inkwell, Oil On Canvas, 18th Century
A captivating portrait of a man from the first half of the 18th century, depicting a gentleman or scholar. The subject is shown in a half-length pose, wearing a brocade dressing gown (*robe de chambre*), a shirt with braid trim, and a period powdered wig. He holds a handwritten document in his right hand, while an inkwell and several volumes are visible beside him on a table draped in red cloth.
A painting of excellent artistic quality, preserved in its original state prior to any recent restoration. The canvas shows areas of paint loss and lifting of the paint layer—clearly visible in the detailed images—offering excellent potential for enhancement through conservation work.
The work comes complete with its magnificent period frame, crafted from finely carved and gilded wood featuring foliate motifs.
