Henri Rivière (1864–1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career in drawing, then moved on to intaglio engraving—specifically etching—in 1882. At the same time, in 1886, he embarked on a career as a director and set designer for shadow theater performances at the Cabaret du Chat Noir, enhancing these shows with the creation of highly innovative, colorful sets. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and printmaking, making his mark in the history of etching, printmaking, woodcut, lithography, and watercolor (he painted approximately a thousand watercolors).
