Henri Rivière (1864–1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing, then moved on to intaglio engraving—specifically etching—in 1882. At the same time, in 1886, he began a career as a director and set designer for shadow theater at the Cabaret du Chat Noir, enhancing the performances with highly innovative, colorful sets. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and printmaking, making his mark in the history of etching, printmaking, woodcut, lithography, and watercolor (he painted approximately a thousand watercolors).
