Pietà (vesperbild) In Polychrome And Gilded Wood – Late 15th / Early 16th Century.

An Early Period sculpture depicting the Pietà (46 x 25 x 15 cm).
Attributable to a Tyrolean or Veneto-Friulian workshop,
the piece perfectly embodies the Northern European
iconographic tradition of the Vesperbild.
The carving captures the transition from Late Gothic to Renaissance,
contrasting Christ's rigidly arched body with the Virgin's sorrowful pietas.
The cloak retains its rich, original gold leaf gilding and
traces of mineral blue (azurite) in the inner folds.
Designed for a niche or a winged altarpiece,
it features a characteristic flat, gouge-flattened back with
its original wrought-iron mounting hook.
The sculpture, carved from an Alpine softwood
(presumably Swiss pine or lindenwood), is in good overall condition,
boasting a magnificent historical patina and authentic period craquelure.
It exhibits natural seasoning cracks, old woodworm holes,
and minor historical paint losses on Christ’s torso.
The base includes an early wooden wedge used for stabilization.
