French Renaissance Revival Curule Stool In Beech Wood And Leather, Circa 1890

A handsome French Renaissance Revival curule-style stool dating from the late 19th-century, circa 1890. The elegant frame is crafted from stained beech wood and features the distinctive crossing X-form legs inspired by ancient Roman curule seats, a design that enjoyed renewed popularity in European interiors during the 19th-century.

The gently curved rectangular seat is upholstered in brown leather, now displaying a particularly attractive time-worn patina. Natural variations in tone, fine craquelure, rubbing and signs of age give the leather considerable character and authenticity. The perimeter is finished with a regular row of decorative square gilt brass studs, providing a refined contrast against the warm brown leather and wood.

The sculptural frame is particularly appealing, with four sweeping curved supports joined by a finely turned central wooden stretcher. Small molded details above the rounded feet add further refinement to the design.

The stool remains highly decorative from every angle and would work beautifully as an occasional seat, dressing stool, fireside stool or as an accent piece in both traditional and eclectic interiors. Wear and patina are consistent with age and use and contribute to its authentic antique character.
