Large 18th-century painting depicting Watson and the Shark, oil on canvas, after John Singleton Copley. Excellent quality and condition. This late 18th-century scene depicts Brook Watson, a 14-year-old English boy, under attack off the coast of Havana (Cuba), while the crew attempts to rescue him. Watson survived despite losing a leg and later became a Member of Parliament and mayor of London. Copley produced numerous versions of this work, of which this is likely one. Other versions are held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Presented in a handmade period frame.
