A Pair Of Scandinavian Ceramic Table Lamps By Kari Christensen, 1960

A unique pair of mid-century table lamps, designed by Kari Christensen and manufactured by Royal Copenhagen in the 1960s.
These beautiful lamps are made of faience and adorned with blue and yellow circular relief patterns.
Stamped at the bottom with Royal Copenhagen/Fog & Mørup.

Kari Christensen (1938–1997) was a Norwegian ceramicist and designer, best known for her work for Royal Copenhagen in the 1960s and 1970s.
She studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Arts and Crafts in Oslo from 1957 to 1961. She then continued her studies at an art academy in Copenhagen.
A significant part of Kari Christensen’s career was devoted to Royal Copenhagen, where she worked for about five years under the guidance of the renowned artistic director Nils Thorsson. She belonged to a generation of young Scandinavian female designers who played an important role in the development of modern Danish ceramics during the 1960s.
Her designs are often recognizable by:
- shades of turquoise, blue, and brown;
- flowers, birds, and stylized natural motifs;
- highly graphic decorations that sometimes have an almost primitive appearance;
- textured and sometimes relief surfaces.

In 1971, she received a gold medal at the International Ceramics Biennale in Florence.
Today, Kari Christensen’s work is increasingly appreciated by collectors of Scandinavian ceramics and mid-century design.
