Silkscreen print “Face on a Yellow Background” based on a work by Henri Matisse
“Face on a Yellow Background” (1952) is one of the most iconic minimalist portraits from Matisse’s late period.
The work reflects his absolute mastery of line drawing. With just a few precise black brushstrokes, he managed to capture a serene and universal facial expression.
The bright, smooth yellow background provides a powerful contrast that immediately draws the eye and fits perfectly with the principles of Fauvism
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was considered the leader of Fauvism, a movement known for its vivid, unnatural colors.
The original work is a gouache in India ink on paper on display at the Grenoble Museum (on long-term loan from the Centre Pompidou in Paris), monogrammed “H.M.” in the lower right corner.
This signature is an exact reproduction of Matisse’s original brush-drawn signature and is part of the print plate (an edition after or based on Matisse).
In 1952, the Grand Exhibition Hall of “La Réserve” in Knokke (Belgium) organized a major retrospective dedicated to Henri Matisse. An exclusive series of graphic reproductions was printed in conjunction with this exhibition.
These silkscreen prints were created to make Matisse’s work accessible to collectors and visitors to the exhibition.
The work is mounted in a laminated wood frame covered with gold leaf.
What makes this piece special is the depth: the gilded edges run along both the outer and inner edges (near the backing).
