19th-century Engraving: The Annunciation

Thisengraving of The Annunciationis a 19th-century interpretive print,specifically published as part of a prestigious art collectionof the time.   Theoriginal painting was created by OrazioGentileschi(a great Italian master of the Baroque period, associated withCaravaggio).   The notation “drawn by Gianni” refers to the artist who served as an intermediary tasked with faithfully copying Gentileschi’s painting as a drawing, in order to prepare the engraver’s work.   Gianni’s drawing was then engraved onto a metal plate (usually using a burin and etching) by the Italian engraver Pietro Bettelin


  • The publisher Désiré Félix Hermet (1845–1894) was a prominent Parisian printer and publisher. Initially a partner at the Goyer & Hermet, he later ran his own printing house under the name F. Hermet in the late 19th century.
  • This engraving is part of a famous collection titled “ The Louvre Museum: A Collection of 500 Engravings Reproducing the Principal Masterpieces of Painting and Sculpture”. It is generally numbered plate 54 in the Italian School section.
  • According to the print records for this Louvre series, Félix Hermet partnered with or succeeded the firm Danlos Aîné (publisher), and the printing of the plates wasentrusted to the workshop of ChardonAîné, one of the leading printmakers inParis during the 19th century.
