Design: Birch frame with green laminate panels, consisting of four hinged, foldable sections.
Dimensions: Height 194 cm.
Square modules: 27 x 27 cm.
Overall dimensions when closed: 55 x 55 cm.
Width of the open bookcase (photo 1): approx. 160 cm.
Function: Versatile piece of furniture that can serve as a modular bookcase or a movable room divider, thanks to its hinges.
This versatile folding bookcase was part of a collection of forty products created by twenty designers, launched by the Swedish furniture giant IKEA in 1994 under the name IKEA PS.
The items in the PS collection stood out for their simplicity and functionality, reflecting the new functionalist spirit that prevailed in furniture design in the early 1990s.
The collection’s name suggested that these items complemented the company’s standard lineup; they were generally more expensive than its classic products.
They remained, however, more affordable than contemporary furniture from other manufacturers. With the PS line, IKEA introduced a more avant-garde design, of a quality capable of rivaling that of contemporary furniture manufacturers, which at the time were dominated by Italian brands.
Thanks to such initiatives, IKEA introduced contemporary design to a new and very large market.
