An antique mechanical yarn winder (often called a “yarn tower” or “measuring winder”) dating from the late 19th century, used in the textile industry to measure the length of yarn and make skeins.
Structure and components: a large spoked wheel (the reel itself) driven by a crank to wind the yarn over a precise circumferential distance; a comb or a strip with vertical rods on the side to guide the threads and keep them parallel; as well as a counting mechanism equipped with a bell to indicate the number of revolutions completed.
