"magic In A Box" Ultra-compact Fold-away Desk By Mummenthaler & Meier, Swiss, 1950

Artist: Ernst Mummenthaler & Otto Meier
This cabinet-desk is the original "Magic in a Box" model created by Mummenthaler & Meier (Switzerland) in the 1950s. The concept was to pack all the functions of a desk—including ample storage—into a closed unit no larger than a transatlantic steamer trunk.
It is instantly recognizable by its retractable lamp (featuring a rounded sycamore edge) and a desktop surface that unfolds in five sections.
Simply open the unit, unfold the desk with its various storage compartments, and you are ready to work.

Despite its compact size when closed, once the desktop is unfolded, there is plenty of room to work and write, even with a laptop open on the surface.
The built-in light is highly practical; its adjustable position illuminates the desk surface without causing glare. It switches on automatically when pulled toward you.
A large drawer with multiple compartments sits beneath the desktop. The dividers can be removed or rearranged to customize the drawer's layout.

This is a highly practical desk with impressive storage capacity; best of all, everything is within easy reach—unlike standard desks with deep drawers where items tend to get jumbled together.
Selected shelves can be removed (and stored flat at the bottom) to accommodate bulkier items, documents, or books.
Another advantage is that it can be locked, keeping everything secure and out of sight.
With its beautiful vintage design and compact footprint, it is ideal for small spaces, living rooms, or even bedrooms.
Comes with its original key.

Teak exterior; sycamore and beech interior.

The unit is in good overall condition, as shown in the photos. There are some moderate, superficial signs of use consistent with a well-cared-for vintage piece, but no damage or missing parts. The dimensions are as follows:
Only the height is fixed: 113.5 cm

In the closed position:
Width 83 cm
Depth 56 cm

In the open position:
Width 168 cm
Depth 74.5 cm

Finally, in the semi-open position, the side panels—angled inward toward the desktop—create an intimate, enveloping workspace; this sensation is heightened when only the desk lamp is on and the rest of the room is dark.
Note that the left-hand panel is folded in the photo, but it can certainly remain open in this configuration:
Width: 135 cm
Depth: 74.5 cm
