Carved And Gilded Linden Wood Mirror, Piedmont, Mid-18th Century
An 18th-century wall mirror from Piedmont, crafted from carved and gilded linden wood. The rectangular frame houses a mirror bordered by small mirrors held in place by two carved moldings, embellished with gilded floral details. The carvings on the frame include a apron with volutes and leaf scrolls, sides embellished with floral clusters, and rocaille feet. The cornice features an elaborate interplay of acanthus leaves, curls, and overlapping rocaille corbels. This mirror is a refined example of the fusion between Baroque style and the lighter Rococo style, typical of Turin’s artistic production of the time. Similar pieces are documented in scholarly texts and found in Savoyard residences, such as the Stupinigi hunting lodge.
