17th Century Antique Painting - The Exodus In The Desert - Circle Of Giulio Carpioni

Antique oil painting on canvas from the 17th century (17th century),
attributable to the circle or sphere of the Venetian Baroque master
Giulio Carpioni (1613-1679).
The work depicts a lively choral composition
depicting an episode of the biblical Exodus into the desert,
an iconic theme that Carpioni often addressed and
replicated in his famous sacred compositions.
Draped female figures and
mothers with newborns, captured in dramatic poses,
stand out in the lower left, while in the background, the frayed rendering of tree branches
highlights the typical rapid brushstrokes of Venetian-Vicenza painting of the period.
The painting was executed on a dark background,
a typical practice of the master's workshop.
Over the centuries, the chemical interaction between this layer and
the surface glazes has caused the natural decay and
coloring of the brown and tan pigments, which today appear darker.
This effect accentuates the chiaroscuro contrast and
is a clear indicator of the authenticity and historicity of the paint layer.
Relined and mounted on a new wooden frame.
The work measures 87.5 x 64 cm (canvas) and is sold complete
with its period black ebonized box frame with gilded internal trim,
for a total size of 105 x 84.5 cm.
