Francis Renaud (1887 –1973):

Bornin Saint-Brieuc, after attending the city’s municipal drawing classes,Francis Renaud enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, where hestudied in the studios of Ronsin and Laffont. In 1908, he enrolled at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in the studios of Merson, Cormon, and later Injalbert. In 1913, he abandoned painting in favor of sculpture. As early as 1908, he participated in the Salon des Artistes Français by exhibiting a still life, and five years later he returned to the same salon with a sculpture.

Drafted during World War I, he was seriously wounded in 1915. It was likely for this reason that he volunteered to create war memorials, and in 1919 he received his first commissions for the monuments in Ploufragan and Tréguier. These were followed by those in Saint-Brieuc, of course, but also in Etables, Plouec-sur-Lie, Trévé, and Plussulien. Francis Renaud won a bronze medal at the 1921 Salon des Artistes Français, and from that date on, his participation in national exhibitions became very frequent.

His collaboration with the Henriot Manufactory began during the preparations for the 1925 Decorative Arts Exhibition, at which he presented a terracotta head. His collaboration with the Henriot lasted only a few years, as the artist was not very satisfied with the quality of the pieces produced. A few years later, he turned to the HB Manufactory to have his “mourner” from the Tréguier war memorial produced.
