Engraving After Marguerite Gérard, “je M’occupois De Vous.” G. Vidal – 18th Century

A beautiful, large intaglio engraving from the late 18th century, depicting a romantic scene in an interior setting.

This composition is based on a painting by Marguerite Gérard (1761–1837), as indicated by the inscription in the lower left corner: “After the painting by Mlle Gérard.”

The engraving was executed by Géraud Vidal (1742–1801), a French engraver active in the second half of the 18th century, whose name appears in the lower right corner: “Engraved by G. Vidal.”

The scene depicts an elegantly dressed young woman receiving the attentions of a gentleman in a refined interior.
A seated maid, a guitar, and various pieces of furniture complete this intimate composition, characteristic of genre and gallant scenes from the late reign of Louis XVI.
The work bears its title in the lower margin: “JE M’OCCUPOIS DE VOUS.” ”The engraving is of fine quality, with particularly detailed rendering of the fabrics, costumes, and interior.
This early print exhibits a general patina, some foxing, and signs of age—visible particularly in the margins—without detracting from the composition.

Mounted under glass in an antique gilded wooden frame, with some signs of wear.
