This bronze dates from the early 20th century. It is signed “J. CARDONA” on the base and also bears a foundry stamp reading “bronze guaranteed to standard, PARIS.”
José CARDONA, or Josep Cardona i Furró,born in BARCELONA on July 30, 1878, and died on October 23, 1922, was a Spanish sculptor.
He was a close friend of Pablo Picasso during the painter’s youth in Barcelona; they shared a studio. He traveled and worked in France, which influenced his art and earned him recognition beyond Spain; he received an honorable mention at the 1906 Salon des Artistes Français. Hebelonged to the second generation of Catalan Modernist sculptors. His works are distinguished by a vibrant Impressionist style, often depicting portraits, genre scenes, or figures from everyday life (such as children or miners). Beautifully crafted
