17th Century, French Provincial Walnut Chest Of Drawers
Exceptional Mid-17th-Century French Provincial Walnut Chest of Drawers
*Louis XIV Period – Uzès, France, circa 1650*
A remarkable and very rare French walnut chest of drawers from the Louis XIV period, crafted with exceptional skill in southern France, near Uzès, circa 1650.
This exceptional provincial chest of drawers features a beautiful, molded rectangular top made of solid walnut in one piece, with particularly striking grain, resting on three large, deep drawers.
Each drawer has retained its original hand-forged brass handles and lock plates, a valuable testament to the authenticity and enduring quality of this piece. The chest of drawers rests on its original short, block-shaped legs, with its original plank back and paneled sides, giving it a completely authentic and intact character that is extremely rare today.
The walnut has acquired a superb dark patina; its warm color and slightly undulating surface reflect more than three centuries of careful use and polishing. The clean, straight lines and classical proportions are characteristic of the Louis XIV period, while the slight curve of the front adds softness and elegance to its strong architectural presence.
The three wide drawers offer generous and practical storage space, while retaining the refined simplicity and timeless sophistication that distinguish early French provincial furniture. Equally at home in a living room, bedroom, entryway, or office, this piece will bring rustic elegance and authentic 17th-century character to any interior.
Both highly decorative and perfectly functional, this is a true collector’s piece of antique walnut furniture—a chest of drawers with a commanding presence, charm, and authenticity, ideal for both period decor and as a striking contrast in a more contemporary setting.
