A striking pair of late 19th-century Victorian Glastonbury armchairs in pitch pine, dating from around 1880 and offered in excellent original condition.
These highly decorative Gothic Revival armchairs display a wonderful aged patina, with the pitch pine showcasing a fine, lively grain and warm caramel tones. Each chair features a square-paneled back, boldly shaped arms with a graceful serpentine profile, and attractive trefoil-pierced fretwork that enhances their ecclesiastical character.
The flat seat is neatly recessed within the frame at a comfortable height of 46 cm, making them both practical and sculptural. The distinctive X-shaped square-section legs and broad pegged joints create a fascinating silhouette while attesting to the quality of their construction.
