Austrian Biedermeier is a style that originated in Austria and spread to Germany, Switzerland, and several other European countries during the first half of the 19th century, particularly from 1815 to 1848. The style takes its name from the satirical character Gottlieb Biedermeier, created to represent the tastes and interests of the bourgeoisie. The Biedermeier style reflects the democratic values and the aspiration for simplicity, comfort, and practicality typical of the middle class of that era.
