Mario Chichorro (1932–2023) – Original Hand-painted Earthenware Plate – Leclercq & Lardin, Roanne
Mario Chichorro (1932–2023) Original hand-painted earthenware plate Faïenceries Leclerc & Lardin – Roanne – 1994
Rare original plate created in 1994 by Mario Chichorro in the workshops of Faïenceries Leclercq & Lardin in Roanne, reflecting the collaboration between the Portuguese painter and this Roanne-based manufacturer, renowned for its artist editions.
Entirely hand-decorated, this one-of-a-kind piece features an immediately recognizable visual language. At the center is a radiant organic composition, reminiscent of a sun, a tree of life, or an expanding network of vegetation. Surrounding this central motif, a wide border is enlivened by graphic symbols, geometric shapes, stylized silhouettes, and decorative elements evoking the artist’s distinctive Mediterranean and Iberian world.
The design, executed in a palette dominated by reds, ochres, blacks, and oranges, reveals the full spontaneity of Chichorro’s brushwork. The lines remain free, expressive, and deliberately naive, in a style that blends figuration and the imagination.
The reverse bears the handwritten inscription: "ROANNE 1994 – Chichorro"confirming the authenticity of this work.
About the artist: Born in 1932 in Portugal, Mario Chichorro belongs to the generation of artists who profoundly revitalized Portuguese painting in the second half of the 20th century. Having lived in France for part of his career, he developed a highly personal artistic universe blending Iberian influences, folk art, mythology, nature, and the imagination.
A painter, printmaker, illustrator, and ceramicist, he has exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions across Europe. His work is distinguished by a spontaneous graphic style, warm colors, and immediately recognizable iconography, frequently featuring stylized figures, birds, fish, suns, and plant forms. His ceramic works play an important role in his artistic career and were produced in collaboration with several French manufacturers.
